New Avenue of Honour Tree in Daylesford
Earlier this year a new tree was planted along the historic Avenue of Honour on Raglan Street in Daylesford, commemorating the life and sacrifice of Private Thomas Alfred Chaplain.
Organised by Hygge Property, the tree planting ceremony was attended by members of the local community who gathered to pay their respects.
Private Chaplain, born in Daylesford in 1882, attended Daylesford State School before working as a miner. In May 1915, he enlisted in Brisbane and joined the 26th Infantry Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. He served at Gallipoli, where he tragically died from dysentery aboard the hospital ship HS Galeka on 8 November 1915. He was buried at sea and is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial in Turkey.
The new tree replaces one removed to allow for essential road access at Middleton Field.
Speaking at the event, Hygge Property Development Manager Catherine Webster reflected on the importance of preserving the Avenue’s legacy:
“May this tree grow strong and tall, a lasting symbol of their resilience and sacrifice. And may we, as a community, always honour their memory by living lives worthy of the price they paid.”

The Avenue of Honour remains an important part of Daylesford’s heritage, with each tree representing a life lost in service. Hygge Property is pleased to support efforts to maintain and restore this meaningful landmark alongside the Daylesford RSL.
